Instruction includes demonstrations and student hands-on practice of Muso Shiden Ryu Iaido kata (Japanese Swordsmanship forms or exercises). The instructor also demonstrates how these same Iaido movements can teach the therapist focus, correct posture, fluid movement and how to avoid the common injuries related to improper body mechanics.

Iaido and the Massage Therapist or Bodyworker...
Iaido is sometimes considered moving meditation, developing the practitioner's ability to relax and focus. Iaido’s rhythmic movements done before and after a client massage help warm up or cool down muscles, which prevents injury. Iaido kata can easily be practiced in between clients as a way to quickly refresh and increase the therapist’s emotional and physical energy while also developing good postural habits and flexibility.
Iaido techniques help a therapist to maintain his/her body in a relaxed state while giving a massage, therefore less muscular force is required. This helps to alleviate chronic tension and its associated injuries. The practitioner learns to relax the neck, arms and chest while lengthening the body’s trunk. This helps the therapist avoid common postural issues and injuries of the upper body and neck and the movement habits that contribute to them. Iaido also balances the flow of chi (energy) through the body, removing blockages and improving circulation.
Iaido movements lengthen and strengthen every area of the body, (especially upper body) creating greater range of motion and mobility. Iaido develops balance, rhythmic and fluid movement, concentration and coordination, all of which are essential to the Bodyworker.

About Iaido...
Iaido is a non-combative physical and mental discipline. When practicing Iaido one focuses on the moment and attempts to exclude all interfering thoughts. Iaido involves no direct physical contact or combat with other individuals. Iaido forms (kata) are choreographed movement patterns in response to one or more imaginary opponents. Attention to correct body alignment and mental focus facilitates the transfer of force through the body. These same principles can be used by the massage therapist to increase the effectiveness of the massage, while using less effort.
